How I Cured Melasma with Liver Detox

A Step-by-Step Guide to Skin Discoloration Treatment through Cilantro Juice Cleanse (Recipe Below) & Water Fast

UNDERSTANDING WHY IT WORKS

When copper & other trace metals accumulate in the liver, hormone levels, particularly estrogen, can stimulate the increase of melanin, leading to melasma or skin discoloration, often appearing on the face. Increased sun exposure or hormone fluctuations can worsen these spots.

Conventional skin treatments may provide short-lived improvements but can make skin more sensitive to sun exposure, worsening discoloration over time.  The solution is to take an internal approach by supporting liver health through cleansing, helping it to process and eliminate toxins more effectively.

DETAILED BREAKDOWN

Liver Overload from Excess Copper: High copper levels force the liver to prioritize processing copper, reducing its ability to metabolize and clear excess hormones like estrogen and progesterone, leading to hormone imbalances.

Estrogen and Increased Skin Pigmentation: Excess estrogen levels (estrogen dominance) stimulates melanocytes, the cells responsible for melanin production, leading to increased pigmentation or melasma.

Melasma Beyond Copper Imbalance: Hormonal changes, particularly elevated estrogen levels, are a significant driver of skin pigmentation disorders like melasma. Other contributing factors, such as sun exposure, genetics, and certain medications, can further darken affected areas or exacerbate the condition.
Outside of copper imbalance, direct increases in estrogen from the following sources are common triggers of melasma as well:

  • Pregnancy (Chloasma or “Mask of Pregnancy”)
  • Birth Control Pills
  • Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
  • Menopause
  • Thyroid Dysfunction
  • Chronic Stress, causing high cortisol levels and hormonal imbalance

Cilantro Juice & Water Fast Works: Regardless of whether the root cause of liver dysfunction is elevated copper levels or direct hormonal imbalances due to high estrogen levels, incorporating a cilantro juice cleanse can support liver health

HOW COPPER BUILT UP IN THE LIVER - My Story

I once thought that focusing on “superfoods” was the key to staying healthy, so I started my green smoothies and limited my diet to just a few foods like spinach, swiss chard, kale, fish, shellfish, avocados, shiitake mushrooms, chickpeas, lentils, tofu, seaweed, nuts, and seeds. I cut out almost all other foods, thinking I was making the healthiest choice.

Big mistake—this led to a buildup of copper in my liver since these foods were all high in copper and other trace metals. Without balance in my diet, there was nothing to offset these levels. As a result, my blood test showed elevated copper levels.

As copper built up, my liver became overloaded and couldn’t process hormones like estrogen & progesterone effectively. This hormonal imbalance triggered increased skin pigmentation by stimulating melanin production (melasma).

Skin treatments (microneedling, laser, retinoids, bleaching creams) with my dermatologist provided slight, temporary results but increased my skin’s sensitivity to the sun, leading to much darker discoloration.

It took many months of self-testing and research to finally understand what had happened and how to heal myself.

The Skin Discoloration Cycle

Foods High in Copper -> Excess Copper Accumulates in Liver -> Liver Becomes Overworked, Can’t process hormones and toxins effectively -> Hormones Build Up in Liver -> Hormonal Imbalance Occurs -> Hormones Stimulates Increased Melanin Production -> Melanin Shows on Face as Skin Discoloration (Melasma)

STEP 1: Colon Cleanse

  • Why: It’s important to clean the colon before starting a liver cleanse. This helps ensure that when the liver releases stored toxins and metals, the colon can eliminate them efficiently, reducing the risk of reabsorption or irritation.
  • Process: Begin with a colon cleanse to clear out toxins and waste from the intestines.
  • Method: Drink a full cap (or cup, based on the container’s measurement) of Milk of Magnesia then drink 16oz of water.
  • Duration: Allow one day for a full bowel flush, abstaining from coffee, carbs, sugar, and caffeine to prevent additional strain on the liver and intestines.

STEP 2: Liver Cleanse with Cilantro Juice

  • Why: Cilantro contains compounds that support liver detoxification and can help remove heavy metals from the body.
  • Method: Blend a large handful of fresh cilantro leaves with a small amount of water (just enough for the blender to run smoothly). Strain if desired. This can be sipped throughout the day.
  • Duration: For an entire day consume only cilantro juice and pH neutral water (pH of 7, electrolyte water), avoiding all solid foods to focus solely on liver detoxification.
Cilantro Juice Recipe for Liver Detox
Ingredients
  • 1 large bunch of fresh cilantro (about 1-2 cups, packed)
  • 1/2 lemon or lime, juiced (for added detox support and vitamin C)
  • 1 cup filtered water (adjust as needed for consistency)
Instructions
  1. Prepare the Cilantro: Rinse the cilantro thoroughly to remove any dirt or pesticides. Trim off the ends if needed.
  2. Blend: Add the cilantro, lemon or lime juice, and water into a blender. Blend until smooth.
  3. Strain (Optional): Pour the juice through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove any pulp, if desired.
  4. Serve: Drink the juice immediately on an empty stomach for the best detox effects and throughout the day.

STEP 3: Water Fast with Electrolytes

  • Why: A water fast promotes healing by giving the digestive system a break, allowing the body to enter a state of ketosis, reduce inflammation, and activate autophagy, a natural process where cells repair and recycle damaged components.
  • Process: Start a water fast on day three to allow the body to shift into ketosis, where it begins using stored fat for energy and supports deeper detoxification and cellular repair.
  • Method: Use pH-neutral water and add CELTIC SALT or electrolyte powder to water. Sip about 64 to 100 ounces of water throughout the day (roughly 8 to 12 cups).
  • Duration: Continue fasting until melasma clears. To monitor, you can use ketone urine strips to confirm ketosis, which signals the body is in a healing phase. Watch for a white coating on the tongue—a sign of detox; once it disappears, the body may have completed the healing.

STEP 5: Each Day of Water Fast

This breakdown covers the typical fasting effects experienced by many people through Day 5, focusing on cellular repair, metabolic adjustments, and mental and physical benefits.

Look for Ketosis Indicators – physical signs of ketosis including improved mental clarity, reduced hunger, mild acetone-like breath odor, and sometimes a temporary film on the tongue.  Ketone Strips can be used daily to keep track of Ketosis.

Day 1: Initial Adjustment
  • Blood Sugar Drops: Blood glucose levels begin to drop, which may cause some fatigue, hunger pangs, and mild cravings, especially for carbohydrates.
  • Glycogen Depletion: The body starts using stored glycogen in the liver and muscles for energy.
  • Insulin Levels Lower: Lower insulin levels can help reduce inflammation and promote cellular repair.
  • Mental Fog and Mood Shifts: Some people experience irritability or brain fog as the body adjusts to a lack of food.
Day 2: Transition to Fat Burning
  • Ketosis Begins: As glycogen stores deplete, the body begins to shift to fat as a primary energy source, breaking it down into ketones for fuel.
  • Increased Fat Burning: The body starts burning stored fat, which can help with weight loss and metabolic health.
  • Hunger Decreases: Many people report reduced hunger after the first day as ketones suppress appetite.
  • Mental Clarity: Some may start to feel a slight increase in mental clarity as ketone levels rise.
Day 3: Enhanced Ketosis and Autophagy
  • Deeper Ketosis: Ketone production increases, providing energy for the brain and body, which may improve focus and mental clarity.
  • Autophagy Increases: The body begins a process called autophagy, where it cleans out damaged cells and recycles cellular waste, promoting cellular repair and anti-aging benefits.
  • Reduced Inflammation: Fasting decreases pro-inflammatory markers, which can alleviate symptoms of inflammation, like joint stiffness and swelling.
  • Energy Stabilizes: Many people report feeling a steady, clear energy that’s less reliant on sugar.
Day 4: Continued Cellular Repair and Growth Hormone Release
  • Enhanced Autophagy: The body continues deep cleaning and cellular repair, which can benefit the liver, brain, and immune system.
  • Improved Focus and Mental Sharpness: Many people experience heightened mental clarity, likely due to ketones fueling the brain and autophagy reducing cellular waste.
  • Stabilized Blood Pressure and Heart Rate: Fasting can reduce blood pressure and heart rate due to decreased stress on the cardiovascular system.
Day 5: Deep Ketosis and Optimized Cellular Regeneration
  • Peak Ketosis: The body is now fully relying on ketones for energy, which may enhance physical endurance and cognitive performance.
  • Maximized Autophagy and Detoxification: Cells continue their repair processes, and the body may more efficiently eliminate toxins and damaged cells.
  • Immune System Rejuvenation: Fasting promotes immune cell regeneration, potentially boosting immune health and resilience.
  • Reduced Appetite and Stable Mood: Many people experience a profound decrease in appetite and feel calm and stable, both mentally and physically.

STEP 4: Signs of Healing Completion

  • Skin Pigmentation: Skin discoloration, Melasma, will completely fade away.
  • Skin and Eyes: Whites of your eyes becoming clearer, indicating improved liver health.
  • Tongue: The white film that appears on the tongue during fasting will eventually clear, suggesting the detoxification process is complete.

STEP 5: Reintroduction of Healthy Foods

  • Purpose: Transition gradually to support digestive health and avoid overloading the liver with sudden food reintroduction.
  • Method: Slowly add nutrient-dense foods. Limit foods high in copper, as excess copper can disrupt hormone balance and contribute to discoloration.  SEE FOOD LIST BELOW
  • Duration: Gradually transition to a Mediterranean Diet or diet with balanced foods

Conclusion

Achieving clear and healthy skin, particularly when addressing conditions like melasma, requires more than just topical treatments—it demands an internal, systemic approach. The liver plays a central role in regulating hormone levels and detoxifying trace metals like copper. When overloaded, it struggles to function optimally, which can lead to hormonal imbalances that trigger increased melanin production and skin pigmentation issues.

Research supports the benefits of fasting and liver detoxification in restoring balance, promoting hormonal health, and supporting overall body function. Additionally, maintaining a well-rounded diet—rather than focusing solely on high-copper “superfoods”—ensures a healthier balance of nutrients to avoid overburdening the liver. This holistic strategy addresses the root cause of melasma, offering long-term improvements in both skin and overall health.
